Hey Mariners fans, I just received an email about fans not getting to the games in time due to all the construction that is going on around the stadium I thought I would pass this info on.

Heads up for Mariners games at Safeco Field
If you are heading to a Red Sox/ Mariners game this weekend in Seattle give yourself extra time to get to the game. There is a lot of construction near the park, between Safeco Field and Qwest Field on Royal Brougham Way and on First Avenue, south of the ballpark. Both streets are open but there are significant lane closures. It’s best to avoid Royal Brougham unless you plan to park in the Qwest Field garage. There are numerous surface parking lots north of Safeco closer to downtown that aren’t too far of a walk to the park. You can get more information at www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/sr519/

Also, we plan on having the site updated more frequently. Hopefully we will have a mariners blogger that enjoys writing that will be covering the games in the near future!

Aaron Heilman won’t be pitching the Seattle Mariners in 2009 as he has been traded to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Garrett Olson and Ronny Cedeno. Olson was just acquired by the Cubs when they sent Felix Pie to the Balitmore Orioles. Olson is a pitcher that can throw out of the pen as well as make starts. Cedeno is a middle infielder but can also play a little third base if needed.

Heilman was never really in the Mariners plans when they got him the J.J. Putz trade. Getting two quality players for him works out very good for the Mariners. Expect Cedeno to really push Bentancourt and I expect both of them to have pretty good seasons.

Good trade for the Mariners!

The Seattle Mariners took part in a three team trade late Wednesday night as they finally did something at the Winter meetings. In the first trade by new Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik, he sent J.J. Putz, Sean Green, and Jeremy Reed to the Mets and also sent Luis Valbuena to the Indians. In return, the Mariners will be getting Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians, and right-handed pitchers Aaron Heilman and Maikel Cleto, left-handed-hitting first baseman Mike Carp, left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas and outfielders Endy Chavez and Ezequiel Carrera from the Mets.

Heilman, Carp, Chavez and Gutierrez could prove immediate help for the Mariners.

I like this trade for the M’s as they stock pile some young talent and also get Heilman who can be a decent starter for the team. The key to this trade for getting Gutierrez from the Indians as he is a speedy center fielder and a hell of a player.

What do you think of the deal Mariners fans?

Raul Ibanez turned down the Mariners arbitration offer on Sunday night and will be seeking a long term deal on the free agent market. Ibanez had until 9 p.m. PT to notify Major League Baseball whether he would accept arbitration, guaranteeing himself a substantial raise for one season.

Mariners management has said that there is still a possibility of Ibanez returning to the team for the 09 season, it just depends what kind of money is seeking on the free agent market. If Ibanez signs with another organization, the Mariners would receive two Draft choices in next June’s First-Year Player Draft.

Stay tuned to the blog this week as we will be updating with any breaking news from the Winter meetings in Las Vegas.

The Seattle Mariners have hired Don Wakamatsu as their next manger. Wakamatsu was a coach for the Oakland Athletics last year and is very familar with the Western Division. He also spent four seasons as the bench coach for Buck Showalter down in Arlington.

Wakamatsu is the first Asian-American manager in Major League history, and he’s the first significant hire in the new era of general manager Jack Zduriencik. “I welcome the challenge here to bring a world championship to Seattle and the fans of the Seattle Mariners,” said Wakamatsu, after being introduced by a giddy Zduriencik and holding up his new jersey with the No. 16.

Wakamatsu said that communication and leadership will be key and he hopes that it carries over to the team.

Time will tell if this was a good hire for the Mariners, but what does everyone thing? Leave us a comment and let us know your opinion if you want.

The dissappointing season for the Seattle Mariners got worse on Wednesday night as they were beaten by the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels beat the Mariners by the score of 6-5 and gave the M’s their 100th loss of the 2008 season. Yeah, things have been that bad this year.

Felix Hernandez was the starting pitcher for the Mariners and he got hit hard as he gave up 13 hits and five runs in six innings. Hernandez didn’t get the loss however as Mark Lowe dropped to 1-5 on the year with the loss. Lowe gave up three hits and one run in two innings of action. Lowe gave up a solo home run to Mark Teixeira that ended up being the winning run of the game.

Jose Lopez and Jeremy Reed both had rbi doubles for M’s in the game as they both finished with one rbi each. Miguel Cairo and Bryan LaHair both had rbi singles in the game as well to help out at the plate. The offense just came up short against the high powered Angels.

The M’s will try to split the four game series with a win on Thursday against the Angels. I really don’t like thier chances however and expect to see loss 101 for the year.

The Seattle Mariners played the Los Angeles Angels togh on Monday night but they fell just short as they lost the game by the score of 2-1. The Mariners offense was only able to come up with five hits compared to the Angels ten hits, and they also committed one error in the game.

Ryan Rowland-Smith was charged with eight hits and two runs over seven innings. He pitched well enough to win the game but the offense just wasn’t putting any runs on the scoreboard to back him up. Rowland-Smith is now 4-3 on the season. Roy Corcoran and J.J. Putz both pitched one inning of relief after Rowland-Smith was taken out.

The only run for the Mariners came in the third inning when Raul Ibanez grounded out to first and Luis Valbuena scored. At that time the score was 1-0, but it was the only run the Mariners would score as they offense struggled at the plate to knock in any runs.

The Mariners and Angels will face off once again on Tuesday night as they M’s try to even up the series and finish the 2008 season strong.

The Seattle Mariners have packed things in and are ready for the 2008 season to be over it appears. They were hammered, beaten, and crushed by the Kansas City Royals on Thursday afternoon by the score of 12-0. Yeah, you read that right… The M’s have now lost eight straight games.

Ryan Feierabend was terrible in his 3 1/3 innings as he was charged with six hits and eight runs. Feierabend gave up one home run while walking three and striking out two batters. Sean Green was bad out of the bullpen once again as he gave up two runs in relief. Jared Wells and Jake Woods both gave up one run as well.

And for the offense, well there really wasn’t any offense on Thursday afternoon. The M’s struggled at the plate as they only had three total hits. The offense sucked just as bad as the pitching staff!

Eh, what a terrible game for the Seattle Mariners on Monday night as they were shut out by the Kansas City Royals 3-0. That is not the way the M’s wanted to kick off their series down in Kansas City that is for sure.

Carlos Silva pitched 5 1/3 innings while giving up eight hits and two runs. Silva took the loss to fall to 4-15 on the year. Yeah, 4-15 lol… Sean Green pitched one inning in relief and also gave up one run. Green can’t give up that run as the Mariners were struggling at the plate and three runs was just asking for too much out of the offense.

Yeah the offense, shut out against Kansas City. Talk about a big let down. The M’s only had four hits in the game against Kyle Davies who pitched eight strong innings. Bad game for the bats.

The Seattle Mariners held off the Texas Rangers by the score of 8-7 on Wednesday afternoon. The Mariners gave up four home runs to the Ranagers but answered back with plenty of rbi singles to somehow win the game. The two teams split the short two game series.

Mariners starting pitcher Cesar Jimenez only pitched the first three innings and then was taken out of the game. He had only given up one hit and struck out four but walked two batters. Jared Wells pitched bad in his one inning of action as he gave up three hits and four runs including two two-run home runs. Jake Woods gave up a two-run home run as well in the game. Not to be left out, Miguel Batista served up a solo home run.

Roy Corcoran ended up getting the victory while J.J. Putz recorded his 13th save of the season.

Raul Ibanez led the M’s at the plate with two rbi singles and a rbi double to finish the game with three rbi. Kenji Johjima wasn’t too far behind as he finished the game with two rbi on a two-run single. Yuniesky Betancourt and Matt Tuiasosopo finished up the rbi’s with one each.

Good win for the Mariners even though the pitching staff gave up four home runs. The offense sure picked them up this game. Mariners Blog
