The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Phillies assistant GM Charley Kerfeld has scouted Erik Bedard recently. This has been documented and it is not really news, as they have also shown interest in C.C. Sabathia of the Indians as well. But the inquirer reports the M’s have had scouts out in Reading to watch the Phils top pitching prospect righty Carlos Carrasco. The M’s are also expected to be in Philly for the weekend to scout out some of the Phillies big league talent.
Many believe the relationship between Current Phillies and former Mariners GM Pat Gillick and the M’s front office, give the Mariners a better chance to reach a deal then a Phils and Indians Sabathia deal, especially given what Cleveland will want in return for what could be a rental player if he bolts via free agency after the season. The non waiver trading deadline is July 31st.
